The Importance of Discomfort

As parents and educators, one of our greatest instincts is to protect our children from struggling. When we witness our child feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, or uncomfortable, we naturally want to step in and make life easier and make the big uncomfortable feelings that everyone is feeling go away.

Here’s a thought: what if some discomfort is actually an important part of learning?

Growth rarely happens when everything feels easy. Whether a child is learning a new academic skill, navigating a friendship, advocating for themselves, or trying something unfamiliar, challenges provide opportunities to develop confidence, resilience, and independence.

At TLC Learning Group, we believe that children are not defined by what they can do today. They are learners who grow through encouragement, practice, and meaningful support.

We believe: Discomfort Is Where Learning Happens

Learning something new often feels uncomfortable.

A child learning to read may hesitate when they encounter an unfamiliar word. A student working through a math problem may feel frustrated when the answer does not come immediately. A child practicing communication skills may feel nervous about speaking up or asking for help, or navigating a social group and figuring out how to join the conversation.

These moments can be challenging, but they are also where important growth happens.

When children experience manageable challenges with the right support, they begin to develop an internal belief, which is one of my favorite sayings to my own children:

"You can do hard things."

That belief becomes the foundation for confidence. By supporting your children through hard challenges instead of avoiding them allows them to grow and begin to understand “I can do hard things”.

Helping children grow does not mean allowing them to struggle alone. The goal is not to remove support; it is to provide the right support at the right time.

This might look like:

  • Encouraging a child to try one more strategy before giving up

  • Helping them identify what feels difficult and why

  • Teaching them how to ask for help

  • Celebrating effort, persistence, and progress

  • Creating a safe environment where mistakes are viewed as part of learning

Children need to know that challenges are not something to fear. They are opportunities to discover what they are capable of.

Learning Extends Beyond Academics

At TLC Learning Group, we understand that education involves more than reading, writing, and math skills. Children are also developing the skills that will help them throughout their lives:

  • Communication

  • Problem-solving

  • Self-advocacy

  • Emotional regulation

  • Perseverance

  • Confidence

These skills are built through everyday experiences, involving conversations, challenges, reflection, and opportunities to try again.

The Role of Parents and Educators

One of the greatest gifts we can give children is the confidence that they are capable.

Instead of immediately solving every problem, we can sometimes ask:

"What do you think you could try next?"

Instead of focusing only on the outcome, we can celebrate:

"I noticed you kept trying even when it was difficult."

Instead of seeing frustration as something negative, we can recognize it as a sign that learning is taking place.

Children do not need a life without challenges. They need caring adults who help them navigate those challenges with confidence.

At TLC Learning Group, we believe every child deserves to feel capable, supported, and empowered to grow. Through personalized learning experiences, we help students build not only academic skills but also the confidence and resilience they need for lifelong success.

So, the next time your child encounters something difficult, remember that struggle is not always a sign that something is wrong. Sometimes, it is evidence that growth is happening.

A challenging moment can become a powerful lesson when children are given the tools, encouragement, and support to work through it. It’s also a very powerful lesson for us parents too! Knowing we didn’t succumb to the meltdown or give in to the discomfort. These experiences help children develop the confidence to approach future challenges with curiosity and perseverance.

At TLC Learning Group, we are honored to partner with families in creating learning experiences where children feel safe to try, make mistakes, and grow into confident learners.

Consider this: What might change for your child if they began to see challenges not as something to avoid, but as opportunities to learn, grow, and discover what they are capable of?

Every child deserves the opportunity to experience success, build confidence, and develop a positive relationship with learning. If your child is experiencing frustration, losing confidence, or needing additional support to reach their potential, we would love to learn more about their unique learning journey.

Together, we can create a personalized plan that helps your child build skills, confidence, and the belief that they are capable of overcoming challenges.
