The Blueprint of Resilience: The Role of a Mother's Love
The other day, while scrolling through Instagram, I stumbled upon a post from one of my favorites, Dr. Nicole LePera from the.holistic.psychologist, that grabbed my attention. It said:
"A mother wires her child for lifelong resilience. Her nervous system is the blueprint for our own."
My first reaction— "Oh no, my kids are doomed!" Instantly, I was flooded with memories of all the moments when I lost my patience, felt overwhelmed by anxiety, or wasn’t as present as I wanted to be. In that moment, I sarcastically thanked myself: “Congrats, you’ve successfully doom-scrolled your way to feeling awful.”
But instead of closing the app and walking away, I kept scrolling, hoping the next line would offer a little more comfort. It did:
"The first person to regulate our nervous system is our mother, beginning at conception. This is called biological synchrony."
This struck me. It’s beautiful, and it’s true. When our kids were babies (or if you currently have a baby) cry, we don’t demand answers in a stern voice. We embrace them with love, telling them, “I’m here, don’t worry. Mommy is here to help with the scaries and the pains.” In that moment, I realized that the soothing love we give our children is what helps them build resilience—it's the foundation of their ability to regulate their emotions and navigate life’s challenges.
Feeling a sense of hope, I continued reading.
"Our mother builds our brain through the relationship we have with her. Her soothing voice creates neural circuits in the brain linked to resilience and capability. As we age, her love is neuro-protective. We may face many difficult and painful experiences, but the safety she provides us is coded into our mind and body."
Yes! As I reflect on my own relationship with my children, I recognize that when they have a bad day or get hurt, I’m the first person they turn to. No matter how old they get, my kids still need that reassurance: “I got you. Mommy is here to help with the scaries and the pains.”
As a parent, we can sometimes feel like we’re not doing enough. We see our moments of frustration and worry about the impact they’ll have. But this post reminded me that the love, presence, and care we provide our children are the very things that wire their brains for resilience and emotional strength.
So if you're a parent or caregiver, remember: the love you offer is not only comforting, it’s also shaping your child’s future resilience. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about showing up, connecting with love and compassion, and offering support when it matters most. And if you don’t get it right the first time, know this: you always have the ability to repair.
